Noises in the loft: what to record before an assessment

Noise alone does not establish mice, rats, squirrels or another cause. A careful record helps a professional decide what needs assessment.

Independent information and enquiry website operated by Stephen Meredith. We do not carry out pest-control inspections or treatments.

Keep a short observation log

Note the time, area of the building and whether the sound repeats. Record any animal actually seen or other safely observed evidence separately from your interpretation.

You do not need to estimate the number of animals or identify a nest. “Repeated noise above the rear bedroom in the evening” is a useful observation even when the cause is unknown.

Stay within safe access

Do not climb into an unsafe loft, disturb unknown material, lift flooring or open services to gather evidence. An assessor should explain what access is needed and how it will be arranged.

If a normal accessible view or existing photograph helps describe the layout, mention it. Do not move belongings around solely to find an animal or expose a suspected route.

Prepare the property context

Explain the affected rooms, known access restrictions and any relevant recent roof or building work. Include earlier professional advice or pest visits if available.

For a rented or shared building, establish who can authorise access. Keep sensitive security and personal information out of the website enquiry.

Ask what the inspection will establish

  • How will uncertain identification be handled?
  • Which spaces and access requirements are included?
  • How are findings and recommended next steps recorded?
  • What is the initial assessment price and what is excluded?
  • Would any repair or exclusion work be separately assessed and quoted?

Avoid premature proofing

An apparent opening should not be sealed from a general web checklist. Species, present activity and the building’s functions can affect the suitable action and timing.

Ask a competent professional to assess the proposal. This site provides planning questions, not trapping, poison or wildlife-removal instructions.

Choose the next guide

Use the mouse, rat or squirrel pages for their distinct assessment questions, without treating them as a diagnosis. The cost page helps compare an inspection with any subsequent work.

If you send an enquiry, it is saved for operator review. No technical assessment, visit or contractor appointment is created by submitting the form.
